Around The Car
We’ve put together a guide of quick and easy car maintenance measures for all of the self-serve car owners out there. Take care of your car and your car will take care of you!
AROUND THE CAR:
- Whenever you clean your windshield at home or at the gas station, be sure to inspect the wiper blades as well. Instead of waiting until the rubber is brittle or worn, replace them once a year, especially if chattering or smearing occurs.
- Make sure all of your lights are clean and work properly—that’s brake lights, emergency flashers, turn signals, tail lights and headlights.
- You should check your tires at least once a month. Look for bubbles, cracks, bulges and bald spots. Improper inflation pressure, suspension neglect, improper balance and misalignment can all lead to uneven tread wear. Not only are improperly inflated tires unsafe, but they lead to reduced fuel economy and increased wear. Check the tire’s manufacturer for suggested pressure level.
- Check shock absorbers for any signs of oil seepage. When worn or leaking shocks are replaced be sure to replace them in pairs. You can further test the shock action by bouncing the car up and down. When you step back from the car it should stop bouncing.
- To ensure safe and quiet driving, every spring and fall put your car through a thorough exhaust system inspection. It is common for mufflers to fall off cars because the hangers and supports are broken. With a little maintenance, the system life for your exhaust system can be extended significantly.
