What Maintenance Does a Hybrid Vehicle Require?
Hybrid vehicles have grown in popularity largely due to the fuel efficiency provided by their relatively small engines. Motorists who appreciate a high-performance urban driving experience value the electric motor’s acceleration capability. Although maintenance on a hybrid vehicle shares many commonalities with that of a conventional vehicle, there are a few key differences. Here’s what you need to know to keep your hybrid vehicle in peak condition.
- Hybrid electrical system
The electrical aspects of your hybrid vehicle include an electric motor and a high-voltage, rechargeable battery pack. An electric generator harnesses the energy produced during vehicle operation and transfers it to the battery pack, further reducing the need for the fuel-driven combustion engine. The electric motor requires no maintenance, and the battery pack is designed not to be serviced.Unlike the hardworking cooling systems in conventional vehicles, your hybrid system’s water-cooled components are exposed to less-extreme temperatures and therefore need less servicing. If you have an air-cooled battery pack, you may need to clean or replace the air filter occasionally.
- Combustion engine
A conventional vehicle relies solely on its gasoline- or diesel-powered internal combustion engine. In contrast, a hybrid’s engine is only engaged when the car needs extra power or if the battery needs to be charged. As a result, your hybrid vehicle’s engine sees less wear and tear and requires less-frequent oil changes. - Braking system
Your hybrid vehicle benefits from regenerative breaking technology, which harnesses the kinetic energy created by the friction on your brake pads and converts it into electricity. Regenerative braking allows your vehicle to delay the deployment of your conventional braking system until later in the deceleration process. Your braking components, such as rotors and brake pads, get less wear and build up less heat, prolonging the lifespan of your brakes.
To make the most of your hybrid vehicle’s braking system, experts recommend regular servicing for lubrication, descaling and bleeding.
Follow The Manufacturer’s Guidelines
Of course, the last word on maintaining your hybrid vehicle comes from the maker. Refer to your owner’s manual for the appropriate time and mileage intervals for servicing. Your warranty may demand strict adherence to the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.
